Kok expansion under way in Cottage Grove
The expansion and renovation of Kok Funeral Home is under way.
Crews are two months into a building addition of nearly 3,300 square feet to the facility at 7676 80th St., in Cottage Grove.
Once complete, the funeral home’s size will increase to almost 10,000 square feet and nearly every interior space of the existing facility will have been renovated.
Mike Shea, Kok’s funeral director and manager, said the funeral home and cremation service will remain fully operational during the project.
“We’re very fortunate that our sister chapel at 1201 Portland Ave., in St. Paul Park, is only about a five-minute drive from our Cottage Grove chapel,” Shea said in a statement. “That allows us to fully serve families during this process. Arrangements, visitations, and funerals can be held there.
“For the convenience of our families, we have also leased office space in the building right next door to the east of our Cottage Grove funeral home, so we’re as close to our existing building as we possibly can be,” he added.”
Shea said that he and the staff are very excited about the project and this significant investment to the Cottage Grove community.
While the main structure of the existing building will remain, the addition and improvements on both the interior and exterior will make it look very different. The exterior renovations will include a second main side entrance, new windows, board-and-batten siding, and stone accents in a new color scheme. A second driveway exit to 80th Street will be added to the property to improve the safety and flow of traffic, both in and out of the parking lot.
The new addition will accommodate a reception center complete with a caterer’s kitchen and seating for approximately 100. The building expansion also allows for a larger chapel and lobby area which will make gatherings of friends and family more comfortable. She said a private family viewing room will provide the setting for a more intimate farewell, if desired. A receptionist area, additional public restrooms and reconfigured work spaces will increase the efficiency and function of the building. The lobby will include a beautiful fireplace feature. A new audio system, a computerized kiosk in the merchandise selection room, and flat-screen televisions for streaming video tributes will be added.
If weather cooperates, the project should be completed by fall, Shea said.
