Just a sliver of high-speed rail funding for Minnesota
$8 billion in stimulus grants for high-speed rail routes were announced yesterday by the administration of President Barack Obama. Minnesota's take? Just $1 million for planning a link between St. Paul and Madison, Wis.
State rail advocates have been lobbying for funding federal funding for a route connecting the Twin Cities to Chicago. Officials in south Washington County hope that line passes along a route from Red Wing, though Cottage Grove, St. Paul Park and Newport north to St. Paul's Union Depot.
Three competing routes through Minnesota have been discussed; the $1 million will be used to conduct a route planning study.
In comparison, Wisconsin received more than $800 million to build a high-speed rail link between Madison and Milwaukee.
