John Kriesel biography picked for Washington County reading event
John Kriesel has represented Cottage Grove-area communities in the Minnesota House the past two years, and now Washington County residents are being encouraged to read about his military history.
Kriesel's biography, "Still Standing," was chosen for the Washington County Library System's "One County, One Book" reading program in January. The book tells the story of Kriesel's near-fatal injuries while serving in the National Guard in Iraq in 2006. Kriesel was riding in a Humvee that came under attack. He lost part of both his legs in the explosion. Two other soldiers were killed.
After a lengthy recovery and rehab, Kriesel, a Cottage Grove Republican, went on to be elected to the House in 2010. He is stepping down after one term.
The county book program includes a number of ways people can get involved. Copies of "Still Standing: The story of SSG John Kriesel" are available for loan at all Washington County Library branches. Kriesel's book was written by author Jim Kosmo.
Library book clubs will be discussing the book at winter meetings.
Also, residents are being encouraged to comment about the book on the library system's Facebook page.
Kriesel will speak about the book and his story at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the R.H. Stafford Library in Woodbury. Adults and teenagers are invited to listen and ask Kriesel questions.
The county pays for its "One County, One Book" project with grants from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, which is supported by a statewide sales tax.
