Improvements to silence train horns at Cottage Grove crossing
Improvements to an at-grade rail crossing that will allow trains to pass through a Cottage Grove neighborhood without sounding their horn could begin as early as this spring, city officials said recently.
The estimated $70,000, federally-funded project will construct a center median and make other safety improvements to a rail crossing at Belden Boulevard that are required to designate it a train horn quiet zone. The crossing is located adjacent to a residential neighborhood near Hadley Avenue.
A similar project was completed in the rural River Acres neighborhood in 2010 as part of the city's annual road maintenance program.
The project had been delayed while Cottage Grove waited for a federal grant awarded to the city to be disbursed, said City Engineer Jennifer Levitt. Work will begin this spring or summer, she said.
