Hillside Elementary marks 50th birthday with a bash
Hillside Elementary School will celebrate the half-century mark with a “50th Birthday Bash” from 5-8 p.m. Friday, May 30.
Located at 8177 Hillside Trail in Cottage Grove, Hillside will assume the look of a carnival. Spread across the school grounds will be a petting zoo, inflatable obstacle course, the dodgeball-like game Ga-Ga Ball, a dunk tank and a mobile media center where kids can play video games.
“We would love to have alumni come back, whether it’s students or former teachers,” Principal Erin Shadick said. “Everyone is invited.”
Visitors can buy a chance to step inside the cash machine, a transparent booth where forced air will circulate green paper vouchers that can be grabbed and redeemed for prizes.
Donations are needed for the cash machine prizes. They can be dropped off at the Hillside front office and can include cash, gift cards, new children’s books or games and tickets to sporting events, the zoo or a museum.
Admission to the games and activities requires a wristband, which can be purchased for $15, $20 and $25 for varying levels of access.
Picnic-style meals will cost $5 the day of the event. The price includes a hot dog or hamburger along with a cupcake, chips and a beverage. There will also be concessions with pretzels, nachos, Dairy Queen Dilly Bars and cotton candy for sale. Credit cards will be accepted.
Roger Mathiesen, a former Hillside principal, still lives on the same street as the school. He said he’s planning on attending the 50th birthday bash.
“It was a very good group of parents and students that I worked with,” said Mathiesen, 75. “They were very cooperative. It was a good school.”
Proceeds from the event will benefit Hillside Elementary School.
