East Ridge students collecting donations for Haitian relief

Four students at East Ridge High School in Woodbury have organized "Hearts for Haiti," a campaign to collect donations for residents of the earthquake-torn island.

Tenth-graders Shua Bhattacharya, Vincent Bedard, Melanie Rabino and Erin Yockey will collect donations at all school events this week and through Friday, Jan. 29, Bhattacharya said. The money will go to the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund.

Thrivent will match dollars for Haiti

In response to the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has announced a $1 million challenge to its members across the country, according to a press release.

Thrivent Financial will match $1 for every $2 donated by Thrivent Financial members up to $1 million for the potential of generating $3 million. Funds will be directed to four Lutheran organizations to support their Haiti earthquake relief efforts: Lutheran World Relief, ELCA Disaster Response, LCMS World Relief and Human Care and WELS Committee on Relief, the release noted.

Thrivent Financial members interested in making a financial gift to help earthquake victims in Haiti can make their donation online at www.thrivent.com/helpinghaiti or by phone at (800) 236-3736 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Central time, Monday through Friday. When prompted, please say "directory" then enter ext. 83003. Thrivent Financial will add a maximum of $250 per member donation, and donations will be accepted through March 31.
