Greg Juba teaches area youth one last lesson
Let the lasts begin to pile up for Park girls soccer coach Greg Juba.
Juba said the objective of the camp has been to teach skills, but also have some fun.
He’s run the camps each year with the help of current Park players.
“We have such a great group of high school girls that always come out and are trying to be good role models,” Juba said. “When you’ve got female role models, it’s pretty easy going. Our girls at Park soccer are very nice student athletes.”
At the conclusion of the camp the campers had an opportunity to further chat with the older players, allowing them to build on the bond they’ve established throughout the week. Juba said many of the campers come back during the season to watch their newfound role models.Juba said he prefers to have the camp later in the summer, because that’s often after most kids have completed their summer seasons. The camp also serves as a nice prep for kids before their fall team tryouts.“It gives those girls a week or two break and now gives them time to get a lot of touches on the ball so they can start trying out,” Juba said. His Park squad hits the field for the first time -- in Juba’s final season -- Aug. 11.And though it’s his swan song, it’s a season Juba is looking forward to.“We try to have a lot of fun and we try to win a lot of games,” Juba said. “If we’re healthy, I think we’ll be able to compete with any team in the state.”
