Former superintendent takes helm in Stillwater Area School District
The Stillwater Area School Board is set to hire Tom Nelson, retired South Washington County Schools superintendent, as its interim superintendent for a year.
On Tuesday, July 27, the board voted to hire Nelson, but will take a final vote Aug. 12 after background checks are done and Nelson agrees to a contract.
Nelson, when contacted in Arizona where he lives, said he is not good at retirement and looks forward to returning to Minnesota where he spent his education career.
He could start as early as Aug. 16, according to board members.
The hiring creates an unusual situation in that Nelson's predecessor, former Stillwater Superintendent Keith Rykoski, has just started his new job as assistant superintendent of secondary education in School District 833.
Nelson served as superintendent of schools in Buffalo, Minn. He retired in 2004 and took the superintendent's position in School District 833 in 2005 for four years before retiring.
