The St. Paul Park Heritage Days Committee has dropped the traditional Sunday night fireworks display from this year's list of events at the festival held in August.
"In order to keep the same lineup of events on Saturday and Sunday, we had to cut the fireworks, which cost anywhere from $3,000 to $4,200," said committee member and former chair Ruth Dinger.
The display was in danger of being cut in 2009 but saved by last-minute donations from Marathon Petroleum, two city council members, Tennis Sanitation and the city, Dinger said. "We solicited help from everyone last year because it was our 25th anniversary."
New committee chair Greg Langbehn is open to fundraising specifically for fireworks, he said at a meeting Tuesday. One suggestion was to use the proceeds from sale of wristbands -- new this year -- to underwrite fireworks in 2011. A second option was to have fireworks every other year.
