Fire departments conduct prescribed burn in Newport
The fire from a prescribed burn belched black smoke into the air Saturday as the St. Paul Park and Nexport fire departments took down a condemned home in Newport.
St. Paul Park Fire Chief Kurk Lee said the city of Newport purchased the home, located at on the corner of Second Avenue and 10th Street.
Local firefighters to used the home for training exercises and then conducted a prescribed burn, Lee said.
The smoke could be seen from Highway 61 and more than a dozen neighborhood residents watched as several firefighters set the home ablaze.
