Feb. 5 caucuses: What you need to know

Minnesota is among the states that hold local precinct caucuses as the first step in the 2008 election process. Below are some commonly asked questions about that process:

Q: When are the precinct caucuses?

A: Precinct caucuses for the DFL and Republican parties will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Q: Who can participate?

A: Anyone who will be eligible to vote by Nov. 4, 2008, can participate. Anyone over 16 can attend.

Q: Where will they be held?

A: Locations are shown below. Precinct caucuses are not held at the same location where you vote on Election Day.

Q: What happens at a precinct caucus?

A: At the precinct caucus, delegates are elected to attend the district convention. Participants will discuss election issues, debate resolutions that anyone may introduce for possible inclusion in the party's state platform and cast a straw vote for a presidential candidate.

Q: What do precinct delegates do?

A: Delegates elected at the precinct level will attend the district convention. The DFL district convention is scheduled Saturday, March 29 at South St. Paul High School. The date of the Republican district convention had not been determined at the Bulletin's press time.

Q: What happens at the district convention?

A: At the district convention, delegates will be elected to attend the state convention. The DFL state convention is scheduled Friday through Sunday, June 6 to 8 in Rochester. The Republican state convention will be held Thursday through Friday, May 29 to 31 at Mayo Civic Center, Rochester.

Q: What happens at the state convention?

A: At the state convention, delegates are chosen to represent the party at the national convention. The Democrats will hold their national convention in Denver, and the Republicans in St. Paul.
