Free concert -- The Grand Symphonic Winds will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, at Newport Lutheran Church, 900 15th St., in Newport. The program is free and open to the public. Special Concert -- A special Mother's Day concert by the North Central University Chorale will take place at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 10, at Light the Way Church, 7000 Jamaica Ave., in Cottage Grove.
The group features former Park High School alumni James Magee, Mitch Panek and Francine Magee. This will be their last concert before their European tour, which begins May 11. The tour is the last with the university for James Magee, who is graduating with a bachelor's degree in musical performance. He was recently named the Outstanding Performance Graduate of the Year at North Central University.

Plant sale -- The spring bedding plant sale at the Cottage Grove campus of the Woodbury/Peaceful Grove United Methodist Church, will take place from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, May 14 and 15 and from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 16.
Plants including flowers, vegetables and hanging baskets are provided by Gerten's. Perennials, from the gardens of parishioners, will also be available.

Free community meal -- Members of the congregation at St. Rita's Catholic Church, Cottage Grove, prepare and serve a free community meal at 6 p.m. the third Friday of the month. Pancake breakfast -- Breakfast at Applebee's Neighborhood Bar and Grill, in Cottage Grove, will be hosted by members of Community United Church of Christ, in St. Paul Park. It is scheduled from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 16. Tickets are $5 each at the church or at the door. Breakfast will include pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, orange juice, pop and iced tea.
A Great Day of Service -- Members of Discovery Community Church, 828 Portland Avenue, in St. Paul Park, will celebrate five years of ministry by giving back to the community on Saturday, May 16. Multi-generational event -- The Dakota-Washington County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is hosting a multi-generational event for Thrivent members only from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, at the LeDuc Historic Estate, 1629 Vermillion Street, in Hastings. There will be indoor and outdoor activities focusing on the Civil War time period including games, root beer floats and other refreshments.
40th Year Celebration -- Mark Shepperd, minister of music at Woodbury Lutheran Church, 7380 Afton Road, in Woodbury, will celebrate hi 40th year in ministry with a concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 17 at the church. The concert is free and open to the public. The Woodbury Lutheran Chorale, children's choirs, bell choirs, instrumentals, ensembles, and a guest choir from North Heights Lutheran Church, will perform original works by Shepperd, including a mass number for all groups, according to a press release.
