The filing period for two seats on both the Cottage Grove and Newport city councils closed Tuesday evening with several first-time and incumbent candidates seeking four-year terms.

The candidates will be on the ballot in November.

The Cottage Grove City Council race saw filings from both incumbents, Dave Thiede and Derrick Lehrke, who are seeking second terms. First-time candidates for the two seats include Steve Dennis, Matt Erickson and Tasha Steinmetz.

In Newport, incumbent Tracy Rahm filed and is seeking a second term, and first-time candidate Dave Lund also filed. On the last day of the filing period, longtime Newport resident Paul Hansen also filed. Incumbent Steve Gallagher is not seeking a second term.
