If progress is measured against where a team was a year prior, the 2012-13 season would be marked as a great step forward for the East Ridge wrestling team.

The Raptors continued to take steps forward as it won its 12th dual meet of the season Thursday, playing host to Minneapolis Southwest in the first match of the 3AAA sectional tournament, giving the team a 12-12 season record.

East Ridge won six of eight matches on Thursday, Feb. 14, and received an additional four forfeits on its way to a 54-12 victory.

Ty Okada (106) got the wins started in a hard fought 3-1 match to begin the dual. Ryan Thompson (113) followed suit with a 9-2 win of his own.

The match of the night, however, came from eighth-grader Sam Cheeseboro at 120. Wrestling up a weight class in a move that head coach Hans Horning said was to save points, Cheeseboro found himself losing 14-1 before he was able to score a reversal in the third period.

After getting his opponent, senior Amir Makhkamov, to his back, "Cheese" was able to get the pin.

"Wow, that was exciting," Horning said. "I was out of my seat and darn near on the mat for that. 'Cheese' has a great attitude, he never gives up and he showed how much determination he has tonight."

Kevin Siemers (160) and Nate Tigges (170) also won by pin. Jake Trevis (132) and Josh Stensgard (138) each won by a decision, and Reid Lyden (126), Zach Dreher (182), David Kroger (195), and Jake Pittman (220) all received forfeits.

The Raptors were then matched up against No. 1 seeded powerhouse Apple Valley in its team sectionals match, losing 3-76.

The season culminates for each individual wrestler on Friday, Feb. 15, at Burnsville for the 3AAA individual sectional tournament.
