East Ridge softball: Raptors shut down by Royals, Raiders to start 0-2 in SEC
The East Ridge softball team had trouble putting up runs in its first two games Suburban East Conference of the 2014 season and has started 1-2 on the year.
East Ridge opened the year with a 4-3 loss to conference and intra-district rival Woodbury on April 9, followed up with a 12-5 win over non-conference foe Blaine on April 10, and rounded out week No. 1 with a 5-1 loss to SEC foe Roseville.
In the loss to Woodbury (2-0; 2-0 SEC) East Ridge was held to five hits by Royals’ freshman Ashley Mickschl, who earned her first varsity win.
East Ridge senior Michaela Anderson was 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored in the loss. East Ridge sophomore Christina Pickett was 1-for-1 with a two-run home run and three walks. East Ridge senior pitcher Kelsey Ihns took the loss, going seven innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on 10 hits and three walks while striking out seven.
The Raptors (1-2; 0-2 SEC) got their bats going against Blaine, however, totaling 12 runs on 13 hits. Anderson, who leads East Ridge with a .778 batting average through three games, led the way. She went 4-for-4 against the Bengals (0-1) with a home run and four RBI. Anderson also got the win in the pitcher’s circle, going five innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and two walks. Pickett, second on East Ridge with a .625 average, was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI against Blaine. Also, sophomore Megan Tarara was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored and sophomore Anna Roth was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Roseville junior pitcher Emma Hylen shut down East Ridge in last week’s finale, however, holding the Raptors to two runs on four hits, while striking out eight. Anderson and Roth were each 1-for-3 in the game with a run scored against the Raiders (1-0; 1-0 SEC). Ihns took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on 11 hits and two walks while striking out 10.
East Ridge took on Forest Lake on Monday, April 14, and Hastings on Tuesday, April 15, after the Bulletin went to print. Next, East Ridge is set to play at White Bear Lake on Wednesday.
