East Ridge girls lacrosse: Raptors earn revenge on Stillwater
East Ridge sent a message there may be a new team to beat in Section 4 and the Suburban East Conference.
“It was one of the most exciting games I have ever been a part of,” said East Ridge first-year head coach Andrea Peterson, who won three state championships as a player for Eden Prairie.
Stillwater (2-2; 1-1 SEC) finished last season 15-4 overall and 9-0 and as conference champions in the Suburban East. After beating the Raptors in the section finals, the Ponies went on to take fourth place in the state tournament. East Ridge was 11-5 overall, including going 6-3 in conference play, which was good for third place. The Raptors lost to Stillwater 19-3 in last year’s regular season.However, that was then and this is now.East Ridge (3-0; 3-0 SEC) got goals from seven different players and junior goalie Cara Kaufer stopped 19 shots to help the Raptors beat Stillwater last week.Sophomore attacker Megan Yoshida stepped up with a huge game in the win over the Ponies, scoring a team-high four goals. She also got three ground balls and controlled three draws. But, Yoshida and Kaufer weren’t the only Raptors to stand out in the game. Senior Jessica Hammer scored two goals, had an assist and grabbed four ground balls as well. Also, seniors Ella Frazer, Jenna Griffith and Erin Plourde each scored twice and junior Alina Marie Del Toro scored one goal and had three assists.The win over Stillwater came two days after the Raptors crushed SEC foe Hastings 20-1 and followed a 16-9 season-opening win over Section 4 foe Mahtomedi the previous week.Hammer had a team-high eight points in the win over Hastings with three goals and five assists. The midfielder and Adams State recruit also corralled seven ground balls. In addition, Kayla Griffith scored a team-high five goals and Del Toro and Frazer each scored three times.Kaufer and Megan Reed split time in the net against the Raiders, making three saves each.Weather permitting, East Ridge was set to take on Woodbury (0-2; 0-2 SEC) on Monday, April 28, after the Bulletin went to print. Next, the Raptors are set to play host to Cretin-Derham Hall (3-1; 2-0 SEC) on Wednesday, April 30, at East Ridge High School. The Raptors fell to the Raiders 10-7.
