East Ridge boys swimming & diving: Raptors victorious in pool over Woodbury
The East Ridge boys swimming and diving team proved to be the kings of Woodbury on Thursday.
East Ridge, the defending Suburban East Conference champion, won 10 of the 12 events and earned first and second in five races to mathematically clinch the meet with two events remaining.
The win was East Ridge’s 23rd straight victory in dual meets.
East Ridge won each relay race over Woodbury.
The Raptors won the 200-yard medley relay as the team of James Tidd, Sam Scholz, Kent Rabideaux and Ryan Schiferl touched the wall first in 1 minute, 39.80 seconds. Woodbury’s Brady Bennett, Will Ho, Tom Hathaway and Eric Fong finished second in 1:45.86.
East Ridge won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:29.57. Tidd, Rabideaux, Scholz and Schiferl swam that race for the Raptors. Woodbury’s Garrett Norsten, Eric Westfall, Fong and Austin Kinzie placed second with a time of 1:35.10.
The Raptors’ 400-yard freestyle team of Schiferl, Pierce Firebaugh, Tyler Langstraat and Verhoeven won the meet’s final race with a time of 3:24.58. Woodbury’s team of Bennett, Kinzie, Norsten and Westfall took second with a time of 3:29.74.
Individually, Verhoeven won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.88, edging teammate Langstraat (1:52.81). Woodbury’s Norsten was third (1:52.83). Verhoeven also took the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:59.86. His teammate, Firebaugh took second place (5:02.63). Woodbury’s Norsten was third (5:17.62).
East Ridge’s Scholz won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:58.98, ahead of teammate Alex Heide (2:07.48). Woodbury’s Bennett took third place (2:08.19). Scholz has yet to lose a race in the 200 IM this season. Scholz also won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.12. East Ridge’s Heide was second (1:04.32) and Woodbury’s Westfall placed third (1:05.37).
Tidd and Rabideaux went 1-2 in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 21.73 and 23.27, respectively. Woodbury’s Ho placed third (23.78). Tidd and Rabideaux have placed first and second in every SEC meet this year.
Tidd also won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.96 seconds, outracing Bennett, who had a time of 1:00.43 for Woodbury. East Ridge’s Langstraat took third (1:01.15).
Rabideaux won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.62, besting Woodbury’s Fong, who was second (52.48) and Kristopher Renning, who was third (55.28).
Woodbury’s Ian Carr won the diving competition with a 178.55 score, topping East Ridge’s Lafayette Doty (177.05) and Max Samuelson (171.80). Woodbury’s Tyler Long was fourth (165.25).
Woodbury’s Kinzie won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.83 seconds. East Ridge’s Firebaugh was second (57.78) and the Raptors’ Aleksander Holleran took third (1:01.90).
Next, Woodbury hosts Forest Lake while East Ridge travels to Roseville on Thursday, Jan. 30.
