East Ridge boys swimming & diving: Raptors finish unbeaten at home for second straight season
Last week, the East Ridge boys swimming and diving team made it the second season in a row without a loss at home with a 105-73 Suburban East Conference win over Cretin-Derham Hall.
East Ridge opened the meet with first- and second- place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay. Sam Scholz, James Tidd, Mason Pflieger and David Scholz won the event with a time of 1 minute, 44.65 seconds. Garrett Verhoeven, Alex Heide, Kent Rabideaux and Ryan Schiferl earned second place, just four hundredths of a second ahead of the third place team from CDH, with a time of 1:45.21.
Pierce Firebaugh, Aleksander Holleran and Tyler Langstraat earned the top three places for the Raptors in the 200 freestyle, respectively. Sam Scholz, Tidd, and Schiferl placed first, second and fourth in the 200 individual medley respectively. Rabideaux, Verhoeven and David Scholz earned first, second, and fifth places in the 50 freestyle.
In the second half of the meet, East Ridge opened with their second top-three finish of the night. Rabideaux won his second event of the night, the 100 butterfly, followed by Firebaugh in second place and Holleran in third place.
Verhoeven won the next event, the 100 freestyle. Schiferl placed second and Pflieger placed fourth. Langstraat, Heide and David Scholz earned the top three places in the 500 freestyle. Langstraat won the event, Heide finished close behind him in second, and David Scholz earned third. East Ridge's two relay teams earned first and third place in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Tidd, Firebaugh, Holleran and Verhoeven won the event; and the team of Schiferl, Pflieger, David Scholz and Langstraat earned third place. Sam Scholz next earned his second win of the night in the 100 backstroke, Joey Trevis also placed third in the race. Tidd, Heide, and Pflieger placed first, second and fourth respectively in the 100 breaststroke. In the final event of the night, the 400 freestyle relay, East Ridge placed first and fourth. Holleran, Rabideaux, Sam Scholz, and Firebaugh won the event; and Langstraat, Heide, Trevis, and Josiah Vranyes earned fourth place.
In the diving portion of the meet, East Ridge placed first, fourth and fifth. Max Samuelson won the event with a score of 179.65 points, Lafayette Doty placed fourth with a score of 149.00 points, and Brad Ostrom placed fifth with a score of 138.85 points. The divers also competed in a diving-only meet on Saturday, Feb. 2. Samuelson was East Ridge's highest placer, earning eighth place and a score of 307.60 points. He earned 37 points for one of his dives, adding to his score that would break his own school record by over 19 points. Doty, Ostrom, and Quinn Matthews all had personal best scores at the meet. Doty earned 14th place and 277.5 points, Ostrom placed 18th with 243.4 points, and Matthews placed 28th with 138 points.
East Ridge has its final dual meet of the season this Thursday, Feb. 7 against Hastings at Hastings Middle School.
