East Ridge boys hockey: Wes Walz hired as head coach
Former Minnesota Wild player has been hired as the head boys hockey coach at East Ridge High School.
Walz has coached the East Ridge girls hockey team the past two years. Prior to that, Walz assisted the boys hockey program for the 2010-11 season and was an assistant coach for the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning from 2008-2010. Walz was named Section 3A Coach of the Year in the 2012-13 season for East Ridge and brought great excitement to the hockey program.
Walz played 11 season of professional hockey in the NHL. He was drafted 57th overall in 1989 by the Boston Bruins, and played a total of 607 games during his career in the NHL. Wes was a Masterton Trophy finalist, two different seasons during his career, as well as a Selke Trophy finalist. While playing in the NHL, he compiled 109 goals and 151 assists.
In addition, East Ridge hired Dustin Vogelgesang as the assistant boys hockey coach. Vogelgesang has been the varsity boys assistant coach at Hastings High School since 2009. Vogelgesang also coaches the Minnesota Hockey – Reebok High Performance Select 17s and is an American Development Model Instructor.
Vogelgesang was a three-sport athlete during his high school career in Hastings and went on to play football at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. He and his family currently reside in Woodbury.
A meet-and-greet event with Walz and Vogelgesang will be held in early May.
