East Ridge boys basketball: Raptors stay hot, rout Hastings Raiders 73-43
The East Ridge boys basketball team continued to roll last week.
The Raptors improved to 7-1 overall and stayed perfect at 3-0 in the Suburban East Conference with a 73-43 win over an overmatched Hastings club.
The Raptors went up 37-22 at the half and didn't let up after the break, outscoring Hastings 36-21 in the second half. However, East Ridge head coach Paul Virgin wasn't overjoyed about the 30-point win.
"We were very sluggish in the first half, probably because we haven't played a game for two weeks," Virgin said. "I thought our defense got lazy in the second half and we can't do that in the SEC."
East Ridge held the Raiders (2-6; 1-3 SEC) to 30 percent shooting from the field and out-rebounded Hastings 43 - 29.
"I like how we got every loose ball," Virgin said. "Brad Simonson, Parker Moquist, Xavier Cole and Ryan Keenan are playing great off the bench."
Senior center Conrad Sexe continued his double-double streak with 13 points and 13 rebounds. He now has three straight double-doubles and junior guard Xavier Cole led all scorers with a game-high 15 points. In addition, sophomore guard Sid Tomes netted 13 points and Brad Simonson chipped in nine points. Ten different players scored for East Ridge in the win.
"I feel we really have nine starters not five and they like each other and pull for one another," Virgin said. "This team is fun to coach."
The Raptors currently sit tied with third-ranked Roseville a top the SEC. The Raiders are 9-1 on the year and also 3-0 in the conference.
East Ridge has three good tests this week on its home floor. The Raptors took on Forest Lake (3-5; 1-2 SEC) on Tuesday, after the Bulletin went to press. Next, East Ridge tips off against Mounds View (6-5; 1-2 SEC) on Thursday, Jan. 10, before facing non-conference foe Blaine (5-4) on Saturday, the 12th.
