East Ridge boys basketball: Cretin Derham-Hall ends Raptors’ season in section semifinal
Suburban East Conference rival Cretin Derham-Hall earned some playoff payback on the East Ridge boys basketball team.
East Ridge, ranked sixth in the state and the No. 2 seed in the region, had a 26-23 lead at the half on third-seeded Cretin Derham-Hall, but the Raiders (22-6; 15-3 SEC) outscored the Raptors 49-37 in the second half to steal the win.
East Ridge senior guard Jake Knupp scored a game-high 24 points in the loss. East Ridge sophomore Seth Green scored 11 points and seniors Ryan Kennan and Parker Moquist added nine points apiece. Cretin Derham-Hall sharpshooter Sam Neumann scored 23 points and junior forward Donnell Gresham scored 20 points for the Raiders.
The win gives Cretin-Derham Hall a shot at trying to upset No. 1-ranked and No. 1 seed Apple Valley (26-1) and Duke recruit Tyus Jones in the Section 3AAAA championship. Apple Valley, which beat Park 104-46 in last year’s section tourney opener and is the defending state champion, hasn’t lost to a Minnesota team since Dec. 8 of 2012 – 72-70 to Park Center in the Breakdown Tip-Off Classic last year.
East Ridge graduates eight seniors from this year’s squad – Xavier Cole, Brian Ishola, Moquist, Knupp, Ryan Mathis, Isaac Winter, Keenan and Matt Kryzer.
Prior to the loss, junior point guard Sid Tomes exploded for a season-high 36 points to help lift East Ridge to a 69-44 win over seventh-seeded Eastview in the opening round of the Section 3AAAA boys basketball tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at The Perch in Woodbury.
East Ridge held a slim, 29-23, lead over the Lightning (6-21) after the first half, however, led by Tomes, the Raptors outscored Eastview 40-21 in the second half to avoid an upset.
It was the Raptors’ ninth straight win.
Tomes was the only player to score in double figures for East Ridge in the win. Knupp chipped in eight points for the Raptors.
