East Point Douglas Road near Walmart site reopens
Repaving on a portion of East Point Douglas Road has been completed and the thoroughfare was reopened Friday after a nearly two-month closure.
On July 15, construction crews closed the road from the VFW Red Barn to County Road 19 and detoured motorists around the construction.
Cottage Grove City Engineer Jennifer Levitt said Friday morning that the “contractor is anticipated to be completed with the pavement markings by 4 p.m. and the road will be open to traffic.”
The roughly half-mile stretch of road was closed to allow the road to be upgraded from a rural section to an urban section, Levitt said. Crews also installed concrete curb and gutter, as well as turn lanes into the new Walmart site.
“The project extended trunk sanitary sewer, storm sewer and water infrastructure to Walmart and beyond for future development of the commercial area,” Levitt added.
Motorists will still see some minor construction continuing on the road in the coming weeks, including landscaping and the installation of streetlights, all of which will take place around traffic, Levitt said.
The precursory road work was done in conjunction with the construction on the 170,000-square-foot store, which is slated to open in spring 2014.
