A two-tenths of a mile stretch of 80th Street between Jensen Avenue and Jeffery Avenue closed to vehicle traffic Monday while crews began work on constructing a culvert to aid storm drainage that is part of a package of improvements meant to ease the flow of stormwater in the area from the northern portion of the watershed in Woodbury into the Mississippi River.

The $1.2 million South Washington Watershed District project will also install a trail connection underneath 80th Street, completing a long-awaited link in Cottage Grove's trail system that will connect walking and biking paths from as far south as Jamaica Avenue and Hillside Trail to Kingston Park in the north and eliminate the need for a street-level crossing.

City officials say the tunnel will improve the safety of pedestrians using the busy trail system. The city's portion of the project will not exceed $87,000, under the terms of an agreement between the city and South Washington Watershed District.

During construction, expected to last roughly six weeks, vehicles will be detoured to Jamaica Avenue or Keats Avenue/County Highway 19, then back to 80th Street. Detour signs will be posted to aid motorists, according to the city.
