The statistics will increase after all 2010 crash reports are submitted. A final report will be released later this year.

The latest data also shows that 32 people suffered serious injuries in Washington County crashes last year and authorities made 995 drunken driving arrests. There were 2,539 crashes reported.

There were 11 traffic deaths in Washington County in 2009. That was up from nine fatalities in 2008, according to Public Safety Department data.

The preliminary total of 410 deaths statewide last year compares with 420 recorded in 2009. While the state did not see a drop significant drop in 2010, officials said the numbers remain lower than they were several years ago. There were 657 deaths in 2002.

"We've seen a positive trend-line of fewer road deaths in recent years that points to the success of legislation and proactive traffic safety campaigns," said Public Safety Commissioner Michael Campion. "While it appears 2010 won't show a big reduction in deaths, we are maintaining a low death count and have cut down our annual road deaths by more than 200 since just eight years ago. That is very significant."
