District 5

The District 5 election will feature at least two candidates. Former Woodbury City Council member Cheryl Hurst is running for the seat that will be up for special election. Woodbury resident Lisa Weik will also be running for the seat. Last week Weik was endorsed by area Republicans.

The candidates are vying for the seat currently held by Dick Stafford, who was appointed to the position in February upon the death of commissioner Greg Orth.

District 5 encompasses nearly all of Woodbury.

District 1

Washington County Commissioner Dennis Hegberg will have a challenger in November, who, this time around, is being endorsed by the Republican Party.

Forest Lake School Board member Eric Langness received an endorsement from area Republicans for the District 1 seat, which encompasses Forest Lake, Hugo and other neighboring communities in the northern-most portion of the county.

Hegberg has served on the board since 1989 and in the past has had Republican backing during election years. He currently serves as the chair of the county board.

District 3

District 3 commissioner Gary Kriesel has filed for re-election. The former Stillwater City Council member was first elected to the county board in 2004. As of Wednesday morning no one else had filed to run for the District 3 seat. Which represents Stillwater, Afton and several other communities in the St. Croix Valley area.

The filing period for the county board elections ends Tuesday, July 15.
