Cottage Grove City Council members and public safety director Craig Woolery honored an 8-year-old boy Wednesday night for a life-saving 9-1-1 call the youngster made that saved his father's life.
On March 26, 2008, Chandler Nguyen, then a third-grader, arrived home from school to find his father collapsed in the bathroom, unable to speak. Nguyen's father had suffered a life-threatening brain aneurysm and the 8-year-old calmly called emergency responders and told them of his father's condition, staying on the line until first responders arrived.
"My dad is in the bathtub, something is wrong," Nguyen told the dispatcher in a recording of the 9-1-1 call played at Wednesday's council meeting.
"We're very proud of Chandler," Woolery told a packed council chamber there to see Nguyen receive his Citizen Life Saving Award. "I think he should go on tour showing other people how to call for help."
