Construction on the 177,000-square-foot Walmart Supercenter in Cottage Grove is nearing completion and store officials expect to have customers shopping by the middle of March.
While the exterior of the building, including the parking lot and adjacent roadway, is complete, the inside is where crews are most focused.
“It’s getting real close to being complete on the inside,” said Reid Charpentier, the store’s manager. “We should be getting in there in the next couple of weeks to get the shelving up so that we can start receiving product.”
Last week, the store’s leadership team began training for their new jobs in preparation for the opening, Charpentier said.
In November, the store set up an employment headquarters in a suite next to the Bulletin License Center on West Point Douglas Road. Roughly 150 of the expected 300 jobs have been filled, Charpentier said.
“We’ve had a great response from the community and have hired a lot of Cottage Grove folks,” he said. “We have some fantastic people.
“We have a little bit of everything left available and we don’t want to fill up one area right away so that we make sure everyone gets proper training and that we have the right people in the right places,” Charpentier added.
The super center is expected to have a full retail section, garden center, auto parts department and a liquor store. However, customers will have to access the liquor store using a separate entrance, Charpentier said, due to state liquor laws.
“The construction crews have done a great job on this project,” he added. “We’re getting really close.”
A large ribbon cutting event is planned for the store’s grand opening.
Walmart is still hiring for all department positions.
