Construction on the new 180,000-square-foot Walmart on East Point Douglas Road is in full swing.

Just days after the last pieces of the Cottage View Drive-In sign departed, crews moved on site and began razing the ground in preparation for the proposed Shoppes at Cottage View retail center. To celebrate the official groundbreaking, city officials are planning a recognition ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The shopping center, anchored by the retail giant, is part of the city's plan to rejuvenate business and attract area shoppers to Cottage Grove.

"We are a progressive community and we want to welcome the new opportunities for business growth," Cottage Grove Mayor Myron Bailey said.

Walmart is slated for a spring 2014 opening and plans to employ 300 people.
