Cottage Grove VFW baseball: Post 8752 hits rough patch
The Cottage Grove VFW baseball team has hit the skids heading into the home stretch.
Cottage Grove VFW Post 8752 has lost its past eight games to fall to 3-13 on the season.
Last week, Cottage Grove lost 4-1 to White Bear Lake, 11-7 to Ranview Gold and 3-0 to North St. Paul.
In its most recent game, Cottage Grove was shut out by North St. Paul on Thursday, July 12. Post 8752 outhit North St. Paul 9-5 in the game, but couldn't get a run across the plate.
Braeden Cordts led the way for Cottage Grove in the game, going 2-for-3. Starting pitcher Sam Domeier took the tough-luck loss from the mound. Domeier threw a complete game, allowing three earned runs, walking three and striking out 10. North St. Paul scored a run in the second inning and two runs in the third inning and held on for the win.
In its previous game, against Ranview Gold on July 11, the Cretin-Derham Hall VFW team took an early 11-0 lead, scoring a run in the first inning and five runs in both the second and fourth innings. Cottage Grove responded, chipping away on the deficit with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, four runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning, but couldn't get over the hump.
Domeier, out of the sixth spot in the lineup, led the way from the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Cleanup hitter Alex Keilsa was 1-for-2 with two RBI, and fifth hitter Kyle Strand had two RBI.
In the loss to White Bear Lake on July 9, Cottage Grove had only three hits. Post 8752 went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but that's all it got across the plate.
Keilsa led the way for Cottage Grove, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
On the year, Keilsa leads the team in batting with a .448 average along with a team-leading nine walks and 12 RBI. Sully Brenke is second on the team in batting with a .419 average and a team-high 18 hits. Austin Ulik leads the team in runs scored with 12, while batting .289. Matt Palmquist and Cordts are also hitting right around .400. Palmquist is batting .378 and Cordts is hitting .375.
From the mound, Cordts leads the way with a 2-3 record, and 4.58 ERA, allowing 33 hits in 26 innings pitched, while striking out 17.
Cottage Grove took on Woodbury Black on Tuesday, July 17, after the Bulletin went to press. The District 4 playoffs begin Wednesday, July 18.
