Cottage Grove student Caleb Boe, along with co-leader Bryan Sullivan and a team of 12 other students at Inver Hills Community College, have been selected one of 20 teams nationwide to participate in the 2010-11 NASA University Student Launch Initiative competition.

"To the best of my knowledge, our team, the Inver Thrills, is the first team in Minnesota to be accepted for the NASA competition," Boe said Tuesday. "We are one of the few community college teams competing in the event."

Inver Thrills will face competitors from universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Penn State and Purdue.

Boe said the team will receive $5,000 from NASA to help put its rocket together. The competition involves designing, building and flying a high-power rocket, 10- to 15-feet tall that will carry a scientific payload up to an altitude of one mile. The scientific payload must contain some sort of scientific experiment on-board.

Launch week is April 13 to 18, 2011, in Huntsville, Ala.

For details, check the team website that will be online by Nov. 1 and the Facebook page, Thrills USLI Team.
