Cottage Grove man killed in boating crash on Lake Mille Lacs
A 56-year-old Cottage Grove man was killed Friday, Aug. 8 in a boat crash on Lake Mille Lacs.
According to the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office, Anthony Centeno was in his boat, which was anchored approximately two miles from shore, when another boat collided with his.
The incident occurred just west of Appledorn’s Resort in an area commonly referred to as Shaw’s Reef shortly before 10 p.m. Friday.
In a statement released Monday, Mille Lacs County Sheriff Brent Lindgren said John Ewert, 63, of Anoka, was eastbound in a 1992 Crestline Runabout on Lake Mille Lacs heading toward the shore when he collided with Centeno’s anchored 1985 Alumacraft Runabout.
Ewert’s wife, Diedre, 61, was a passenger.
Deputies from the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the county’s search and rescue team, responded to the scene. The rescue effort concluded around 6 a.m. the next morning when it became a recovery effort, Lindgren said. Officials resumed their search around noon.
Centeno’s body was recovered late Saturday afternoon following an extensive search of the collision area.
Centeno was the sole occupant in the boat and was not wearing a life jacket, Lindgren said.
The Ewerts were examined by medical personnel on shore but did not require any treatment, the press release said.
The incident is under investigation at the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office and will likely be turned over to the County Attorney’s Office for review.
The Isle Police and Fire Department, Mille Lacs Health System ambulance, DNR Enforcement Division, Minnesota State Patrol and Mille Lacs Tribal DNR Enforcement Division also assisted on scene.
Lindgren said “everyone either fishing, recreating, or simply navigating the waters (are to) use their navigation lighting on their boats at night and reduce traveling speeds.” He also stressed the importance of using an anchor light and wearing life jackets.
