Cottage Grove farmers market opens for season
The Cottage Grove United Church of Christ Farmers Market is opening for the season with new vendors and other plans to draw more customers this year.
The market opens from 2:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12. It is held Thursdays throughout the growing season in the church parking lot at 7008 Lamar Ave., across from Lamar Fields in Old Cottage Grove.
While it’s still too early in the season for most produce, there are expected to be 16 vendors on opening day, said Kim Heilmann, the market’s volunteer manager. New items this year include free-range chicken eggs from a Hastings farm, Woodbury-based Snappy Dog Salsa, a smoked salmon vendor and Popcorn Junky, which offers 25 flavors of gourmet popcorn. There also will be roasted coffee from Restoration Java. Other vendors sell jam, jelly, pickles, soaps, honey, spice blends and handmade candles.
The market features only local vendors and products.
“It remains in Washington County and nobody comes from farther away than that,” she said.
For the first time, the market this year will accept vouchers from the low-income Women, Infants and Children (WIC) supplemental food program.
Church members again this year will sell brats and hot dogs as well as baked goods.
Organizers also plan to have musical entertainment some weeks, and hope to have a local fire engine parked at the market this Thursday for children.
