Cottage Grove Coyotes still perfect
The Cottage Grove Coyotes are proving it takes a team effort to remain unbeaten 14 games into the season.
The amateur baseball team improved its record to a perfect 14-0 with two victories over the Metro Blizzard on Sunday, July 21. The Coyotes had a balanced approach on the day, getting hits and runs in the first game from the middle of the lineup before guys further up the lineup connected in the second game.
Starting pitcher Matt Ruben allowed just five hits and one earned run in the Coyotes' 3-1 victory in the early game.
The game went scoreless into the third inning, when the Coyotes put a run on the board and then the Blizzard followed, making it 1-1. But Cottage Grove scored twice in the top of the fourth to make it 3-1.
Joe Paul, Malcolm Kelner and Ross Blesener each had a run. Blessener and Hans Heggernes each finished with an RBI. David Buckner hit a triple while Blessener connected for two doubles and Mike Schirra added a double.
Roger Morrison got the start on the mound in the second game, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out three and walking one.
Ruben, who is batting .361 on the year, led the Coyotes at the plate in the second game, hitting a home run, knocking in two RBIs and stealing a base. Randy Schmidt and Paul each had one hit and an RBI. Blesener finished with a pair of hits. Heggernes, Buckner and Malcolm Kelner added one hit apiece.
The Coyotes scored first in the bottom of the first inning. They made it 2-0 in the third. The Blizzard narrowed that to 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning before Cottage Grove scored twice in the bottom half of the inning to go up 4-1. A Blizzard run in the sixth wasn't enough as the Coyotes finished the day with a 4-2 win.
The Coyotes will look to stretch their undefeated run when they take on the Ducks on Sunday, July 28. The games start at 10 a.m. and noon at Woodridge Park.
