Cottage Grove council discussing furloughs of planning staff tonight
The Cottage Grove City Council will consider adopting a resolution Wednesday that would formally oppose 3M's proposed amendment to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency permit that regulates the company's hazardous waste incinerator at its Cottage Grove plant.
Currently, 3M is permitted to burn only waste produced and managed by the company's North American operations. The amendment would allow 3M to destroy third-party waste in the incinerator.
Council members will also tackle two staffing issues Wednesday night. The council will vote on a measure that would create and advertise for the Organizational Development Manager position. If approved, the additional staff member would cost the city an estimated $22,000 to $28,000 in 2009.
The council will also discuss furloughs for Community Development Department staff at a workshop following the regular meeting. Under the proposal, community development staff -- with the exception of secretaries -- would take 40 hours of unpaid leave during 2010, saving the city $13,000 for the year.
A formal vote on the proposal will not be taken.
Wednesday's Cottage Grove City Council Meeting will begin with an open forum at 7:15 p.m., at Cottage Grove City Hall, 7516 80th Street South.
