Cottage Grove City Council set for Walmart vote Wednesday
The Cottage Grove City Council will vote Wednesday, Sept. 5, on a proposed zoning amendment and site plan that, if approved, would clear the way for the construction of a Walmart Supercenter on East Point Douglas Road near County Highway 19.
The giant discount retailer has proposed to build a 178,000-square-foot pharmacy, retail and grocery store on the current site of the 46-year-old Cottage View Drive-In movie theater; the theater's owner has agreed to sell the property contingent upon the city's approval of the plans.
Planning commissioners recommended the council OK the plans at a meeting last week after postponing a decision in July despite the concerns of some nearby residents and worries over the amount of traffic the store will generate on surrounding roadways.
Council approval of the plan would make this the final season at the Cottage View, one of the few remaining drive-in theaters in the state.
