Cornell senior, Park grad Ryan Nordtvedt named Sportsman of the Year

Cornell senior baseball player Ryan Nordtvedt of Cottage Grove was honored as the 2012-13 Sportsman of the Year at Cornell College's Athletics Recognition Program on May 6 in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

Nordtvedt, a 2008 graduate of Park High School, was recognized for athletic achievement and campus and community engagement during his four years at Cornell. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology and carried a 3.20 cumulative grade point average.

Nordtvedt, a catcher and captain on the baseball team, closed a solid four-year playing career with 86 starts in 99 games with the Rams.

"Ryan helped keep the program moving along during three coaching changes here," second-year head coach Seth Wing said. "Ryan was an excellent example for our younger players as we continue to build this into a championship-caliber program. His leadership will be truly missed."

Nordtvedt played a key role for a young Cornell squad that finished 12-22 this spring, marking the program's most wins in a season since 2008. The Rams finished one-half game short of a potential berth in the Midwest Conference Tournament.

Nordtvedt started 22 games behind the plate during his senior season, his best with the Rams. He batted .277 with 11 runs, five doubles and a pair of home runs. Nordtvedt collected 22 RBIs - third-most on the team - and compiled a .410 slugging percentage. He finished his career at Cornell with 67 hits, 46 RBIs and 31 runs. He was one of four fourth-year letterwinners on the 2013 team.

The son of Larry and Mary Nordtvedt, of Cottage Grove, Nordtvedt was one of two Honor Athletes his senior year at Park High School, received a CGAA Baseball Scholarship and was an All-Conference honorable mention award winner in the Suburban East Conference.
