Car fire halts rush hour traffic on Highway 61 in St. Paul Park
A vehicle fire caused rush hour traffic to grind to a halt Thursday after an SUV caught fire on Highway 61 near the 70th Street/Summit Avenue exit in St. Paul Park.
According to Cottage Grove police officer Dan Schoen, the fire was reported just after 6 p.m.
The driver, who did not sustain any injuries, was not able to pull the vehicle over completely, and police shut down both northbound lanes for nearly an hour.
Because of the cold temperatures, Minnesota Department of Transportation crews were on scene to salt the road after the fire was extinguished, Schoen said, because the ground had already started to freeze.
Cottage Grove police and fire and the Minnesota State Patrol responded.
The site was cleared just after 7:30 p.m.
