Bulletin reporter wins award for veterans story

Bulletin staff writer Emily Buss has earned a state reporting award for her story last year about a group of World War II veterans who met annually in St. Paul Park for six decades.

Buss took second place for “The last men raise a glass” in the Bulletin’s circulation division of the Minnesota Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper Contest. She received her human interest story award during the association’s annual convention last week in Bloomington.

The story recounted the group’s history and the veterans’ final annual gathering last August. At their final meeting, they followed through on a vow to toast with a bottle of aged bourbon. The group disbanded with plans to donate club items, including their original membership cards, to the Cottage Grove VFW.

The story was published Aug. 21, 2013, and is available here.
