‘Buckthorn bust’ planned at Cottage Grove Ravine Regional Park
Friends of the Mississippi River will work with partners Washington County, Washington Conservation District, and the city of Cottage Grove on a “buckthorn bust” event in Cottage Grove Ravine Regional Park, the group’s newest habitat restoration site.
“Buckthorn Bust in Tunnel Valley” will be 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 2, with lunch provided.
Historically, the slopes of Cottage Grove Ravine Park’s glacial valley were covered by oak woodland and savanna; however, they’ve grown in with trees and invasive non-native shrubs. Ecologist Karen Schik with Friends of the Mississippi River will lead the event. Cutting and hauling away brush will help open the canopy, making way for more native plants, which provide wildlife habitat and are better for water quality.
No experience is required and all supplies, including lunch, will be provided, with support from event sponsor 3M Foundation.
Registration is required as capacity is limited. To sign up, call Lindsay Hefferan at 651-222-2193 ext. 24, or email email@example.com.
