Details about the victim were not released by press time, pending family notification.

However, he was identified at a make-shift memorial and on social media as Dylan Thorp.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the boy was in the river at Lions Levee Park Sunday evening when he swam out to retrieve a stick. A witness who was with him said the boy then disappeared under water.

The witness tried to locate the victim without success, and emergency crews were called at 5:13 p.m.

A Washington County fire rescue team made numerous unsuccessful dives to try to locate the victim, and then multiple agencies responded to assist with the search. A State Patrol helicopter also was called out.

Washington County’s dive recovery team took over the search. The boy's body was found shortly before midnight.

The drowning was one of two in the east metro over the Memorial Day weekend. A 21-year-old Coon Rapids man drowned after trying to rescue his 11-year-old nephew from the St. Croix River at Taylors Falls. The boy was pulled to safety.
