Stone Soup Thrift Shop, in St. Paul Park, has helped its shoppers stretch their budgets. Now, the shop needs some help meeting its own.

The shop's sales meet 68 percent of its parent organization's yearly expenses, but it gets the remainder with grants and fundraising, said Majel Carroll, president of the shop's governing board, Basic Needs Inc. of South Washington County.

"The board is trying something new this year," Carroll said. Along with its lead sponsor, Marathon Petroleum's St. Paul Park Refinery, the organization is planning Stone Soup-er Bowl, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at Park Grove Bowl, in St. Paul Park.

"The object is to have fun and raise money," she said.

Registrations are being accepted for sponsors and teams. Each team is asked to find a sponsor and collect pledges. Team members will receive free T-shirts, food, drinks, bowling balls, shoes and games. Sponsorships range from $100 to $3,000.

Organizers are also looking for donations of items or services to be awarded to top-scoring bowlers and teams.

For details, call Carroll at (651) 458-9786 or e-mail majelcarroll@q.com or contact Kara Klink at klklink@marathonoil.com.

To send a donation, make the check payable to Basic Needs Inc. of South Washington County, with Stone Soup-er Bowl on the memo line. Checks can be mailed to Stone Soup Thrift Shop, 950 Third St., Suite 101, St. Paul Park, MN 55071.

Carroll said the goal for the fundraiser is to ensure that Stone Soup remains financially strong and able to continue serving the need for good quality, gently used clothing, furniture and household items in the community.
