Authorities identify man who drowned while swimming at Point Douglas Park
A 40-year-old man drowned Sunday in the St. Croix River at Point Douglas Beach in Denmark Township.
The victim was identified as Juan Gabriel Diaz, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office said witnesses saw Diaz go under the water while he was swimming from the swim area buoys back to the shore. Witnesses said he had called for help just prior to going under the water and did not come back up. Witnesses were unable to locate Diaz. A 911 call was made at 5:05 p.m.
Washington County, Dakota County and Pierce County sheriff’s deputies, the Hastings Fire Department and the Washington County Multi-Agency Dive/Rescue Team searched for Diaz. A diver found his body at 6:20 p.m. within the designated swim area in about 10 feet of water. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The body was turned over to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office.
