Each day of the four-day class, which starts at 9 a.m., includes classroom instruction until noon followed by on-the-water practice until 4 p.m. Class sessions will be held at the St. Croix Marina in Hudson, Wis.

A full annual membership in the St. Croix Sailing Club, picnic lunches and an instructional handbook are included in the $210 course fee.

Ron Dreyer, of Woodbury, an experienced racer and long-time sailor, helps run the club and classes.

The SCSC offers an opportunity to race sailboats once or twice a week during the summer, and non-racing sailors enjoy cruising experiences to some of the finest beaches on the Lower St. Croix.

"There is nothing as enjoyable as flying a spinnaker downwind on the St. Croix River with a bald eagle soaring overhead." said B.J. Battig, former commodore of the St. Croix Sailing Club, of Woodbury. "Racing is a great escape from the workweek every Tuesday."

Although a majority of races are highly competitive, SCSC offers novice racers a series of Friday fun races, followed by a picnic at the St. Croix Marina in Hudson. Races occur on St. Croix Lake between Afton and Hudson. Boats are separated into divisions based on a handicap rating.

"We invite river lovers to enjoy the sun, water, wind and fellowship." said Hughes. "Sailing combines these great attributes while feeding your competitive spirit."

Bill Hooper of Hudson, an owner of Hooper's Yachts in Afton and an avid racer, enjoys racing on Lake St. Croix.

"Sailing is the sport that lets you match your wits with the elements." Hooper said.

Hooper has expertise in boat services and, with boats for sale, is always ready to match a sailboat to a sailor.
