2012 Fall Preview: New coach takes reins of Park girls tennis team
After two years with the Park girls tennis team, head coach Sean Kangrga is out - and a former Wolfpack standout is stepping in.
Park 2004 graduate Ashley Homan has taken the wheel from Kangraga - the Director of Tennis at Wooddale Tennis and Health Club in Woodbury. Kangraga took over for longtime head coach Cris Glade, who spent 11 years as Park's head coach and was Homan's former coach.
Homan is an accumulative 12-time letter winner (four years in softball, six in hockey and two in tennis) who earned multiple team, regional, conference and state honors while at Park. She was a four-year scholarship athlete at St. Cloud State University earning collegiate conference and regional honors and graduating Cum Laude. She's spent the past two years as an assistant coach of the East Ridge softball team.
The 2011 Park girls tennis season officially ended after a string of first-round losses at the individual sectional tournament in Lakeville and the Wolfpack was unable to earn a team win in the Suburban East Conference.
Key returning players include: Juniors Nina Riesselman and Mallorie Briggs and sophomore Maggie Oppold.
This year, the team will need to fill the holes left by top players Andrea Kujz, Savanna Sielben, Nicole Laabs, Sarah Luman and Marissa Walseth.
This fall, Mounds View, Cretin-Derham Hall and White Bear Lake are expected to be the top teams in the Suburban East Conference, while Rosemount is believed to be the best section team.
The Wolfpack kicked off the season with an invitational tournament last week at Park. Remaining key dates on the Wolfpack's schedule include: at East Ridge on Thursday, Aug. 30, at Woodbury on Thursday, Sept. 6, and at home against White Bear Lake on Sept. 27 in the regular-season finale.
