11:45 p.m. update: Tight marriage amendment battle costliest ever

ST. PAUL -- An expensive battle about whether to define marriage as only between a man and woman was, as predicted, a close contest in Tuesday's election.


With slightly more than half of the state's precincts reporting, 48 percent of voters were in favor of the proposed constitutional amendment, which needed 50 percent to pass.

Amendment supporters were optimistic late Tuesday, saying pro-amendment precincts were yet to be counted.
