Weekend planner: Spring garage sale, Concert for Katherine this weekend


VETERANS SEMINAR -- The Washington County Veterans Service Office is hosting a free seminar on veterans benefits from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, at the Historic Courthouse, 101 West Pine St., in Stillwater. SOCCER BRAT/BURGER FEST -- The U14 girls Wolfpack soccer team invites everyone to a brat and burger fest fundraiser, beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday through Sunday, May 1 to 3, at Von Hanson's Meats, 9030 Inwood Ave., in Cottage Grove.

SPRING GARAGE SALE -- Youth at the Catholic Church of St. Rita are holding a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, May 1, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 2, at the church, 8694 80th St., in Cottage Grove. RECYCLED BLESSINGS RUMMAGE -- Rose of Sharon Lutheran Church, 6875 Jamaica Ave., in Cottage Grove, is hosting a Recycled Blessings rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 1 and from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 2. In addition to clothes for adults and children, toys, furniture and household items, there will be fresh baked cookies, homemade crafts and plants.

LEDUC GARAGE SALE -- The LeDuc Historic Estate, 1629 Vermillion Street, in Hastings, will be one of the venues for the Hastings City-Wide Garage Sale. The sale begins at 8 a.m. on May 1 and 2 at 8 a.m. on the grounds of the LeDuc Historic Estate in what is known as the Simmons Shed. Parking is available in the lot behind the Estate. One-of-a-kind antiques and collectibles plus a variety of plants will be featured.


HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION -- A household hazardous waste collection will be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, at the Cottage Grove Public Works Garage, 8635 West Point Douglas Road. For details, go to and click on Disposal options for residents.

HABITAT BREAKFAST -- Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity, a subsidiary of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, is sponsoring a breakfast benefit from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, at Applebee's Neighborhood Bar and Grill, in Cottage Grove. Tickets are $6 per person. Proceeds from the event will be used to help members of All Saints, Woodbury and King of King Lutheran churches build a three-plex home on Case Avenue, in St. Paul.

WALKING CLUB -- Annie Elmer's Walking Club will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at Woodridge Park, 9000 90th Street, in Cottage Grove. All ages are welcome.

WILL ALBERT BENEFIT -- A spaghetti dinner fundraiser for Cottage Grove resident Will Albert is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, at the North St. Paul VFW, 2483 Seventh Ave. E., in North St. Paul. In mid February, Albert was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Proceeds of the benefit will help pay for medical expenses. Tickets for the dinner are $8. Activities will include raffles, a silent auction, games for kids and a bake sale. Raffle items range from a two-night stay at Wisconsin Dells to admission for 10 at the Acme Comedy Club in Minneapolis.


CELEBRATION OF KATHERINE OLSON'S LIFE -- "A Tribute to Katherine: Letting Her Light Shine," a tribute concert honoring Park High School graduate Katherine Olson, is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, at Grace Church, 9301 Eden Prairie Road, in Eden Prairie. Proceeds will go to a memorial scholarship at St. Olaf College, in Northfield, to benefit Latino youth. GREEN WORKSHOP --Community United Church of Christ, 1145 Summit Ave., in St. Paul Park, is hosting a free green workshop from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 3. Participants will hear new ideas to care for the earth and learn how to make a recyclable bag.

MASONIC PANCAKES -- For 28 years, the Accacia Masonic Lodge in Old Cottage Grove has been hosting a spring pancake breakfast. This year is no exception. The 20th annual breakfast is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, at the lodge at the corner of 70th Street and Lamar Avenue. All are invited to all-you-can-eat pancakes, with sausage, eggs, orange juice, milk and coffee. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children, 6 to 12 years old. Children, 5 and younger, eat free. If you donate a nonperishable food item for the Friends in Need Food Shelf, in St. Paul Park, the adult ticket drops to $6.


SENATE DISTRICT 57 REPUBLICANS -- Senate District 57 Republicans will meet from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, May 4, at the Busted Nut Bar and Grill, 118 Second St. E., in Hastings. Guest speakers will include KTLK Radio talk show host Sue Jeffers; AM 1500 radio talk show host Dave Thompson; a Pioneer Press op-ed columnist Craig Westover; State House Rep. Minority Leader Marty Seifert; State House Rep. for District 57B Denny McNamara; and; Phil Nelson, owner of the Busted Nut. All are invited, according to a press release.
