Weekend planner: Food shelf benefit at Park Place Saturday


FREE WELLNESS FAIR -- Century College, in White Bear Lake, will host its first free wellness event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, March 6, on the East Campus Lincoln Mall. The public is invited to attend the event sponsored by the Century Wellness Committee and the Century Nursing Club. Booths and tables on the mall will include representatives from the following areas: Century Physical Education/Health Department, Chinese medicine, chiropractic, fitness and nutrition, healing, life coaching, massage, Medicare, Ochs Inc. (the State of Minnesota life insurance and disability vendor), nurses' scrubs and weight loss. Free blood pressure and body mass index screenings also will be available. The college is located at 3300 Century Ave. N., in White Bear Lake.

HEART ROAD SHOW -- The Heart Truth Road Show, a traveling women's heart health exhibit co-presented by Diet Coke and General Mills, will stop at Maplewood Mall Friday through Sunday, March 6 to 8, to promote heart health among women, offer free heart health screenings, and educate women about their risk of heart disease. Hours are 3 to 9 p.m. on Friday, and 12 to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The campaign is sponsored the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.


SATURDAY CONVERSATIONS -- Park High School is sponsoring "Saturday Conversations with Minnesota Colleges, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, March 7, in the school cafeteria. The program is free and everyone is invited for conversations, coffee and doughnuts. Representatives from the University of Minnesota System, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities and the Minnesota Private College Council will present information about their institutions. Representatives from the Minnesota Higher Education Services Offices will be available to discuss financial aid with students and parents.

FOOD SHELF BENEFIT AT SPORTS BAR -- Longtime St. Paul Park resident Fran Wang believes in giving back. She, along with the management at Park Place Sports Bar, are hosting a "Bring Four, Buy One, Get One" fundraiser for the Friends in Need Food Shelf, in St. Paul Park, from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the bar, 200 Broadway, in St. Paul Park.

Everyone is invited to attend. If you go, take four or more nonperishable food items that can be exchanged for a buy-one, get-one-free drink ticket. The limit is one free drink ticket per person. Activities throughout the afternoon will include drawings, a silent auction, meat raffle and bake sale. All proceeds from the event will go to the food shelf.

CHILD RESOURCE EXPO -- The South Washington County Early Childhood Community Connections Collaborative will host the second annual Early Childhood Resource Expo from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, at the South Washington County Service Center, 13000 Ravine Parkway South, in Cottage Grove, at the intersection of 90th Street and County Road 19.

The expo will feature activities for parents and children ranging in age from birth to 5 years, breakout sessions for parents and community resources for families. There will be giveaways, a raffle and healthy snacks available, according to the press release. For details, call (651) 768-5330.


ALL ABOUT OWLS -- Representatives from the World Bird Sanctuary in St. Louis, Mo., will present a program about owls from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at Carpenter Nature Center, Denmark Township. Everyone is invited to meet the Sanctuary's founding director Walter Crawford Jr. and several exotic owl species while learning the importance of their existence. Reservations are required. ELEMENTARY ART SHOW -- Selected art from each grade level from every elementary school in District 833 will be on display from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 9, at the District Service Center, 7362 East Point Douglas Road, in Cottage Grove. Parents and members of the community are invited to see the art and enjoy the music of a small elementary orchestra ensemble. The art will remain on display through March.


WAFFLE DINNER FUNDRAISER -- A waffle dinner and silent auction fundraiser is scheduled from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, at Crossroads Church, County Road 19, in Woodbury. Everyone is invited for all-you-can-eat waffles with toppings, sausage, orange juice, milk or coffee. Advance tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for youth, ages 6 to 12 years old. Children, 5 and younger, eat free. Ticket prices increase $1 at the door. Tickets will be sold on the weekends before and after services and at the main office during regular hours Monday through Friday.

FOOD ALLERGIES -- Oasis Chiropractic is hosting a free patient education health talk on food allergies that drain your energy, at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, at the shop, 7424 East Point Douglas Road, in Cottage Grove.
