Weekend Planner: Stone Soup benefit, gentle Saturday this weekend


FREE MEAL -- Everyone is invited to free community meals at 5:30 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 920 Holley Ave., St. Paul Park. Upcoming dates are Friday, Nov. 7 and Friday, Jan. 9.


STONE SOUP BENEFIT BREAKFAST -- KARE 11 weather man Sven Sundgaard, movie star Alex Neuberger and Sprinkles the Clown will welcome families to a pancake breakfast fundraiser and silent auction for Stone Soup Thrift Shop, 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Applebee's, Cottage Grove. Tickets are $5 per person for pancakes, eggs, bacon and beverages. Tickets can be purchased at Stone Soup, 950 Third St., the north end of Oltman Junior High School, St. Paul Park, or purchased at the door. Take out will be available.

GENTLE SATURDAY --Take a few hours off at Gentle Saturday, Nov. 8, Cottage Grove Junior High School, and do something different. District 833 Community Education is offering 30 classes that cover a wide area of interest ranging from hobbies, holiday crafts, finance, health, exercise, painting, photography and wills. LETTERS FROM THE FRONT -- Members of the South Washington Heritage Society will hear letters written home by soldiers who served during World War II at the Saturday, Nov. 8 meeting, St. Paul Park City Hall, 600 Portland Ave. The meeting begins at 10 a.m.; visitors are welcome.


WORSHIP ALIVE -- The second session in a "Worship Alive" series of Masses is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 920 Holley Ave., St. Paul Park. All are welcome to attend. Focusing on various parts of the Mass, the service offers special music and dramatized word, liturgical movement and processions.

NEW LIFE JAZZ -- The brass ensemble, New Life Jazz, will perform "Jazzed Up!" in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 920 Holley Ave., St. Paul Park, Sunday, Nov. 9. All are welcome. A freewill offering will be taken for Friends in Need Food Shelf, St. Paul Park.

VETERAN'S DAY DINNER -- Cottage Grove VFW Post 8752 will host its annual Veteran's Day chicken dinner with all the trimmings Sunday, Nov. 9. It's free to all veterans; guests of veterans will pay $8. Veterans need not be members of a VFW post, according to the press release. The event will begin with a brief program at 3 p.m. with dinner at 4 p.m. Preregistration is requested by Saturday, Nov. 8.
