Cottage Grove woman's card to be sold at Hallmarks
Diane Johnson was excited when the Hallmark greeting card company chose her homemade card among others to sell online.
Then Hallmark fans liked it, too, and now Johnson's card - a funny birthday card featuring a childhood photo of her husband, Fred - won a second contest and will be sold in Hallmark stores this summer.
"It was a nice surprise," Johnson, of Cottage Grove, said of winning the card contest. "I didn't have a whole lot of hope that I was going to make it through the final judging."
Johnson, who has artistic interests, last year entered Hallmark's "Remember when" competition, in which people could submit a photo and a caption to be considered for a Hallmark card.
Johnson used a decades-old photograph of her husband dressed in a cowboy outfit. It was taken in Red Wing, where they both grew up and still have family. The old photo is on the front of the card. Hallmark put a small picture of Johnson on the back of the card.
"I tell everybody that's the important side," she joked.
Hallmark notified Johnson recently that her card was among the "best of the best" of the promotion. "Now your creation joins the very best cards in Hallmark stores nationwide," the announcement declared.
The card is expected to be in stores after June 1, but Hallmark has not said which stores will carry it.
As part of the in-store promotion, Johnson won a second $250 cash award and will receive a formal copy of the card. She already has one card that she purchased when it became available online.
"I carry it around in my purse and whip it out at a moment's notice," she said proudly.
